It’s an image thing. Great trucks with tons of American ingenuity and engineering that’s gone into them being used for grocery runs, kids practices and daily wife errands. Though I do see quite a few dually Big 3 trucks actually being used as trucks for work, there’s no reason for a small woman or anyone for that matter to be daily driving a 60-70 thousand dollar, saddle leather leaden big ass truck when a luxury sedan can do it better and more efficiently.

$43k is where I’d personally call it quits on a mid-sizer. But these are probably getting some markups still because of the diesel, which came out 5 months ago. I’ve seen several around town, so they are selling. They must be selling fairly well if the dealer isn’t budging on the price.

They’re actually selling every Colorado/Canyon they can screw together. GM is going to be contracting cutaway van production to Navistar starting next year, so they can free up more plant space for the Coloranyans. That said, there’s no damn way I’d pay that much for these trucks.

Kinja'd!!! PeavineThunder > LJ909
07/07/2016 at 01:43

Kinja'd!!!1

This is exactly why the Coloranyon are bound to fail. You can get a comparable 1/2 ton (minus the sparkplug-less engine) for about the same amount of money, so unless space is tight, or you really want the extra few MPGs, you can get a lot more truck for the money if you upsize to the half ton.

I did a quick comparison (long bed, crew cab on both) and a Colorado Z71 with the midnight appearance package ($5k) and the Diesel ($4k) was at $44525, and a Silverado LT Z71 was at $43265. I do know that the midnight is an appearance package, but with that removed, the truck is a tad over $40k. That’s with the diesel to bring the trailering weight up.

If the crew cab on the Colorado is anything like most mid-sizes, if you need to regularly carry adults in the back seat, spending the extra money on the 1/2 ton is a no brainer.

This was discussed elsewhere on Jalopnik, the conclusion was that unless you NEEDED a smaller truck, it made much more sense to just go up to the Sierrverado 1500. And if you don’t need either, then go with the Ridgeline.

Kinja'd!!! PeavineThunder > Noah - Now with more boost.
07/07/2016 at 01:49

Kinja'd!!!1

It’s even worse for midsize trucks. Drop an extra $7k and for $54k you can have a base-model Silverado High Country, which I’m guessing has everything that this Colorado has, plus more, then there’s the extra space and towing capability (but you lose the offroad stuff and the useable 17-18" wheels).

That said, at $55k-ish, which seems to be about average for a Crew/6'5 top trim truck (F-150 Plat / Ram Laramie Longhorn / Denali / High Country), you basically get the same level of comfort and amenities you’d find in a comparably priced German car, AND you can tow, and fit more people.

That kind of money gets you into well-equipped full-size trucks. And at that price point, you’re less worried about gas mileage, but get, even absent the diesel, a more powerful V8 or EcoBoost (Ford), more payload capacity/room, and more interior room.

I looked at the GM Mid-sized trucks and the Tacoma, but decided I’m going to go with a full-sized because it’s about the same money, and I get more space.

My TV is a 60inch tv but my eyes are in great shape. Should I trade down to a little 20inch tv? Where I live has spare bedrooms that I never use. It seems like a lot of money, but in reality it is just inflation. On average the inflation rate over 100 years is around 3.23%. Now that also compounds over time which is why as time goes on it just accelerates. The vehicle industry, not just the truck segment follow the inflation rate in price increases. I bought a diesel 3500 Ram in 1998. The sticker was around $42,000. In today’s $’s that would be around $62,000-63,000. Guess what, for the same trim level truck which happens to have way more to it, it falls right in line with that figure. Technically you are now getting more bang for you buck. It’s not that truck prices have gone up or out of control, it is that the value of the dollar changes over time. It also seems a bit more difficult to swallow as our cost of living and incomes probably don’t increase at the same rate. Median household income in 1998, about $38,000. Today’s median house hold income, about $53,000, about $3,000 short of the around $56,000 if it kept pace with inflation.

You can park a car, go into a store, and come back out with your purchases while the person who pulled into the parking lot behind you is still trying to park their big-assed truck properly (usually by attempting to back into a space and really sucking at it).

Who am I kidding? Some of them don’t bother trying.

This is my first dually and I always thought it was ok for a dually to take 2 parking spaces, just wondering how many dually owners take 2 spots?? If you do have you ever had any problems? (ie. vehicle towed, angry people)

—-

i dont even have a dually and i take up two spaces...i dont think your crazy for doing it people just dont watch what there doing when they open there doors any more, ive never had any trouble?

—-

If your parking that far away you wont have any problems. When i go to any store I take up 4 spots.I have beendoing it for 5 years now with no problem.

—-

I personally don’t think there is a problem witha person doing it. But, they should be doing it out back a bit more as to not take the spots right near the entrance of the place you are going in. You are just asking for people to get mad and key your truck.

—-

I don’t have a daully and I took two spots at my girlfriends apartment parking lot about two months ago...when I came out the next morning, my truck was gone! It got towed for being “double parked” Cost me $125 clams to get it back, and they dragged it up onto the flatbed IN PARK w/ 4-wheel drive engaged...

Lawsuit pending against the towing company...

two is a must, almost fits in three, and plenty of buffer in four

What’s a ridiculous amount of money to you might not be ridiculous to someone else OR they can justify it differently because they’re more passionate about it than you are. Who knows. It’s none of our business. I don’t care if someone buys an RV to drive to work. If they want to then that’s fine. I don’t care if you eat skittles for breakfast or drive a pink lunar rover to work. They might not be good or practical or rational things to me but it’s your money so do what you want with it. Is it better that the state dictates what you can drive and where you live? Here’s your Fiat 124 rebadged Lada and your 1 bedroom box of a flat that everyone else in the country is eligible for. Hmmm, I wonder where we’ve seen that before.

When you only justification for something is that you “want” it - that was your word, not mine - you’re a child.

Yep, because the only alternatives are 1. Spending your money on tacky status symbols that you’ll never really use or 2. Marxist-Leninism.

Of course, since I think massive trucks that never see any bigger load that a grocery run are tacky and pointless, I’m clearly a Communist who thinks no one should be allowed to have them.

It gets worse - I think sports cars with automatic transmissions are also stupid. By your leap in logic, I’m pretty much the love child of Stalin and Kim Il Sung at this point.

But yeah, you have the right to buy whatever vehicle is for sale. Just like I have the right to say you're a massive douchebag for driving it.

Truck prices like this have soared, because of the demographic who has bought them and made them popular. Bros. Prices have sky rocketed for trucks. When I was a kid my dad worked construction, and used/NEEDED a truck for work. Now, legitimate workers can barely afford trucks, work boots, etc because of the price which has been inflated due to the bros who buy them. I have a “friend” of the family who bought a tundra extended cab in BEIGE, so he can “go off-roadin in this beast!” Face palm.
